What a bathroom remodel costs in Florida, from a cosmetic refresh to a full primary bath, plus tub-to-shower conversions, glass and slab plumbing.

The short answer

  • A standard full remodel of a 5 × 8 ft hall bathroom in Florida typically costs about $15,000–$30,000.
  • A cosmetic refresh that keeps the layout runs about $7,000–$15,000. A primary bath or higher-end remodel often costs $35,000–$65,000 or more.
  • Converting a tub to a tiled walk-in shower usually costs about $4,500–$12,000 on its own.
  • Most Florida homes are built on a concrete slab, so moving a toilet or drain means cutting the floor, which adds $1,000–$5,000 per fixture.

Bathrooms are among the most common remodels in Florida, from updating a 1980s hall bath to turning a dated primary bath into a walk-in shower suite. Costs swing widely because "a bathroom remodel" can mean anything from new fixtures to moving every wall. This guide shows the typical tiers and the line items that move the price.

What drives the price in Florida

  • Slab plumbing. Most Florida homes are built on a concrete slab. Moving a toilet, tub or shower drain means saw-cutting and trenching the floor, then patching it. Keeping fixtures where they are saves real money.
  • Hidden water damage. Leaking tub surrounds and shower pans often hide rot in the framing or damage to block walls. Older homes may also have cast-iron drain lines nearing the end of their life. Build a contingency into your budget; see how much contingency to plan for.
  • Waterproofing. A tiled shower needs a proper waterproofing system behind and under the tile. It's not visible, but it's one of the most important parts of the price.
  • Tile choices. Large-format tile, mosaics and floor-to-ceiling tile take more labor. See our flooring cost guide for tile prices.
  • Glass and vanities. Frameless glass and custom vanities are measured after rough-in and can take weeks to arrive.
  • Condo rules. Condominium associations often restrict work hours, require their own approval and insurance certificates, and control plumbing work that affects other units.

Permits

Bathroom work that changes plumbing, electrical or walls generally needs a permit, pulled by a licensed contractor or by you as an owner-builder. Plumbing and electrical work must be done by licensed trades unless you qualify for the owner-builder exemption. Our bathroom remodel permit guide explains which jobs need one.

Getting accurate quotes

Give every contractor the same scope: room size, what stays, what moves, your tile and fixture choices (or allowances), and the shower type (our walk-in shower vs. bathtub guide can help you decide). Ask for an itemized quote with demolition, waterproofing method, tile labor, plumbing and electrical, glass, permit and cleanup listed separately, and a clear price for repairing hidden damage. Then follow our guide to hiring a contractor in Florida.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a bathroom remodel take?

A full remodel of a standard bathroom usually takes several weeks of work once materials are on site. Custom glass and vanities can take weeks to arrive, so order them early. Inspections and any hidden damage can add time.

Are bathroom remodels more expensive in Miami?

Generally, yes. Published Florida pricing suggests South Florida and other coastal metros run higher than Central and North Florida, mainly because of labor costs and demand. Use the upper half of the ranges if you're in Miami-Dade, Broward or Palm Beach.

Do I need a permit to remodel a bathroom in Florida?

Replacing finishes and fixtures in the same locations often doesn't need one, but moving plumbing, adding circuits, changing walls or replacing a tub with a shower that needs new drain work usually does. See our bathroom permit guide.

Is a tub-to-shower conversion a good idea?

It's one of the most popular Florida bathroom projects, especially for aging in place. Keep at least one tub in the home if young children will live there or if you think buyers will expect one.
