Project Costs
How much does a fence cost?
What a new fence costs in Florida per linear foot for vinyl, wood, aluminum and chain-link, plus gates, removal, pool barrier rules and examples.
Project Costs
What a 6 ft privacy fence costs in Melbourne, Palm Bay and Brevard County, with published local prices, example budgets, and permit and zoning rules.
On our Florida planning ranges, an installed 6 ft vinyl privacy fence costs about $25–$55 per linear foot and pressure-treated wood about $20–$45. That puts 150 ft of vinyl with one walk gate at an estimated $4,000–$8,900. The only per-foot Melbourne prices we found date from 2022 and fall inside that range. Gates, removing an old fence, a survey and your permit office's rules decide where your job lands.
| Item | Estimated range | What affects it |
|---|---|---|
| Pressure-treated wood privacy fence | $20–$45per lin. ft. | Board-on-board and shadowbox styles cost more. Expect more upkeep in Florida's sun and humidity. |
| Vinyl (PVC) privacy fence | $25–$55per lin. ft. | The most popular upgrade in Florida neighborhoods. Wind-rated systems cost more. |
| Aluminum picket fence | $30–$60per lin. ft. | Often 4 or 5 ft tall and common around pools, where pool barrier rules apply. |
| Chain-link fence | $12–$30per lin. ft. | Galvanized at the low end. Black vinyl-coated and taller fences cost more. |
These are our statewide planning ranges for installed 6 ft fences, covering materials and labor for a typical job. They generally don't include permit fees, a survey, HOA application fees or sales tax charged separately. Aluminum and chain-link are shown for comparison, but neither gives full privacy. Companies usually quote per linear foot and price gates and removal separately, so measure the whole run, including gate openings.
There isn't much local price data for fences. Here's what we found, and what each figure can and can't tell you:
National guides are the closest thing to current figures:
The 2022 Melbourne figure for 6 ft vinyl ($26–$41 per foot) sits in the lower half of our $25–$55 planning range. We found no current published Melbourne prices for wood or aluminum fences. All of these are published estimates, not quotes.
| Item | Estimated range | What affects it |
|---|---|---|
| Walk gate (installed) | $200–$600each | Pool barrier gates need self-closing, self-latching hardware. |
| Double or driveway gate (manual) | $500–$1,500each | Large custom or automated gates can cost $2,000–$8,000 or more. |
| Removing and hauling away an old fence | $3–$5per lin. ft. | Expect a minimum charge on short runs. Concrete footings cost more to remove. |
These are illustrative estimates built only from the planning ranges in the tables above. Assumptions for all four: 6 ft fences unless noted, level and accessible ground, no rock or root problems, and standard gate hardware. Permit fees, a survey, HOA fees and sales tax charged separately aren't included. Totals are rounded the way our calculator rounds them.
| Scenario | What's included | Estimated range |
|---|---|---|
| Vinyl privacy fence | 150 ft, 6 ft, one walk gate | $4,000–$8,900 |
| Same layout in wood | 150 ft, 6 ft pressure-treated wood, one walk gate | $3,200–$7,400 |
| Replacing an old wood fence with vinyl | 200 ft, 6 ft vinyl, one walk gate, one double gate, old fence removed | $6,300–$14,000 |
| Privacy in back, open fence in front | 160 ft of 6 ft wood, 40 ft of 4 ft aluminum picket, two walk gates | $4,600–$10,500 |
This matches the calculator's default setup. The fence is 150 ft × $25 = $3,750 at the low rate and 150 ft × $55 = $8,250 at the high rate. One walk gate adds $200–$600, for a total of $3,950–$8,850, or about $4,000–$8,900.
The same layout in pressure-treated wood is 150 ft × $20 = $3,000 to 150 ft × $45 = $6,750, plus the gate, for $3,200–$7,350, or about $3,200–$7,400.
Assumes a larger lot with side-yard access for a trailer or boat. The vinyl is 200 ft × $25 = $5,000 to 200 ft × $55 = $11,000. Add one walk gate ($200–$600), one manual double gate ($500–$1,500) and removal of the old fence at 200 ft × $3–$5 = $600–$1,000. That totals $6,300–$14,100, or about $6,300–$14,000.
Because the whole fence is being replaced, this job would need a permit in unincorporated Brevard, and even the low estimate is over the $5,000 Notice of Commencement threshold (see below).
In the City of Melbourne, a solid 6 ft fence can't go in the front-yard setback (see the table below). This layout assumes 160 ft of 6 ft pressure-treated wood along the sides and rear, all of it behind the front-yard setback, and 40 ft of 4 ft aluminum picket across the front.
The total is $4,560–$10,320, or about $4,600–$10,500. Before you order, confirm with the city that the front fence style you pick meets the opacity limit and that the 6 ft sections sit outside the front-yard setback.

Who reviews your fence depends on whether your lot is inside a city. Viera, Suntree and Merritt Island are unincorporated communities, so fences there normally go through the county, and a "Melbourne" mailing address doesn't always mean the City of Melbourne. Here's what each office's rules mean for cost and layout. For the permit steps and the county's 50% repair rule, see our Brevard fence permit guide.
| Where you live | What it adds to the job |
|---|---|
| Unincorporated Brevard County | A permit for new and replacement fences, with a property survey showing the fence line, height and materials. Like-for-like repairs to less than 50% of a fence don't need one. |
| City of Melbourne | A fence permit (a city ordinance permit). Fences in the front-yard setback are limited to 4 ft and 50% opacity; toward the rear, 6 ft fully opaque fences are allowed. |
| City of West Melbourne | A fence application, a hold-harmless form and a digital survey marking the fence, plus a $110 permit fee on the city's schedule. |
| City of Palm Bay | A zoning permit before installation, with no inspections, for ordinary fences. Pool barrier fences need a building permit with inspections. |
| Melbourne Beach, Satellite Beach, Indian Harbour Beach, Indialantic | We haven't verified their fence rules. Ask before you sign (in Indialantic, ask town hall who issues permits). |

Our Florida planning ranges put a 6 ft vinyl privacy fence at about $25–$55 per linear foot installed and pressure-treated wood at about $20–$45. For 150 ft of vinyl with one walk gate, that's an estimated $4,000–$8,900. Permit fees, a survey, removing an old fence and extra gates add to it, and only a written quote for your yard is reliable.
Yes, and our planning ranges leave both out. West Melbourne's fee schedule, for example, lists $110 for a residential fence permit, and unincorporated Brevard County and West Melbourne both ask for a survey showing the fence line. Check the current fees wherever you live, and if you don't have a usable survey, get a surveyor's price before you set your budget.
Our Florida planning range for removing and hauling away an old fence is about $3–$5 per linear foot, so taking out 200 ft comes to an estimated $600–$1,000. Short runs often carry a minimum charge, and posts set in concrete cost more to remove.
On our Florida planning ranges, an installed walk gate adds about $200–$600 and a manual double or driveway gate about $500–$1,500. Large custom or automated gates can cost $2,000–$8,000 or more. A gate that's part of a pool barrier needs self-closing, self-latching hardware.
Pressure-treated wood usually costs less to install. On our ranges, 150 ft of 6 ft wood with one walk gate comes to an estimated $3,200–$7,400, compared with about $4,000–$8,900 for vinyl. Wood needs more upkeep in Florida's sun and humidity, so compare long-term care as well as the installed price.
