The short answer

  • Installed fences in Florida typically cost about $25–$55 per linear foot for 6 ft vinyl privacy, $20–$45 for wood, $30–$60 for aluminum and $12–$30 for chain-link.
  • A typical 150 ft vinyl privacy fence with one walk gate usually lands around $4,000–$8,900.
  • Gates, removing an old fence and difficult ground add to the per-foot price.
  • Fences around pools must meet Florida's pool barrier rules, and many counties and HOAs control fence height, style and placement.

What drives the price

  • Material and style. Board-on-board and shadowbox wood, decorative vinyl tops and heavier aluminum profiles cost more.
  • Wind resistance. Florida fences have to stand up to strong wind. Vinyl privacy panels catch a lot of wind, so better systems use reinforced posts and deeper footings, and some building departments require engineered or approved designs for certain fence types.
  • Ground conditions. Rock, roots and utility lines slow post holes. Call 811 (Sunshine 811) before any digging.
  • Gates. Each gate needs heavier posts and hardware. Pool gates need self-closing, self-latching hardware.
  • Removal. Tearing out an old fence, especially posts set in concrete, adds cost.
  • Permits and surveys. Some jurisdictions ask for a survey or site plan with the permit application.

Pool fences

If the fence is part of the barrier around a pool, Florida's Residential Swimming Pool Safety Act applies: the barrier must be at least 4 ft high on the outside, with no gaps, openings or footholds a young child could use to get through or over it. Gates in the barrier need to be self-closing and self-latching. Our fence permit guide covers pool barriers in more detail.

Choosing a material

Vinyl and aluminum dominate in Florida because they don't rot. Wood costs less upfront but needs regular sealing and won't last as long in the heat and humidity. Chain-link is practical and inexpensive but offers no privacy. We compare them in the best fence materials for Florida.

Before you sign

Confirm where your property line is (a survey is the reliable way), check your HOA's fence rules and get approval in writing if you have an HOA (HOA approval guide), and find out whether your county or city needs a permit (in Brevard, see fence permits in Brevard County). Ask each fence company for the same scope in writing: material and product line, height, post spacing and footing depth, gates and hardware, removal and permit. See should you get three quotes? for how to compare them.

Frequently asked questions

What's the cheapest fence in Florida?

Galvanized chain-link is usually the lowest cost per foot, followed by pressure-treated wood. For privacy, wood costs less upfront than vinyl but needs more upkeep in Florida's sun and humidity.

Why is vinyl fencing so popular in Florida?

It doesn't rot, warp or need painting, and it holds up to humidity and insects better than wood. It costs more upfront, and quality varies, so ask about wall thickness, post reinforcement and wind ratings.

Do I need a permit for a fence in Florida?

It depends on your county or city. Some require a permit or zoning approval for every fence, some only for taller fences, masonry walls or pool barriers. See our fence permit guide.

Who pays for a fence between two neighbors?

Treat it as a private agreement between neighbors. Agree on who pays what, where the fence goes and who maintains it, put it in writing before work starts, and confirm where the property line is.
